Session SIS 41 -> Objectives Wednesday June 21, 2017   en français

Objectives and Organisation of the SIS 41: Greening road freight transport by electrification

The session will be built as a roundtable involving the main stakeholders and a debate with the audience. A series of 4 to 6 short keynote introductory presentations (6 to 10 mn each) will introduce the main elements and issues and provide the context, to feed the debate. Brief concluding remarks will be delivered at the end of the session.

The EU Council asked for the promotion of energy efficiency, for electric transportation and for renewable energy sources, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GNG) and risks related to fossil fuel dependency. EU needs to speed up energy efficiency and decarbonisation in the transport sector, which is responsible for 30% of energy consumption and 24% of GNG. Heavy duty vehicles represent the second largest source of road GNG. The objective is transforming the transport sector by reducing transport GNG by 60% by 2050 compared to 1990 and by around 20% by 2030 compared to emissions in 2008. Electrification, reducing the number of "empty runs" and improving the aerodynamics of the trucks, eco-driving strategies and smart routing are among the ITS based solutions which could contribute to this challenging objective.

The session will be a unique opportunity to bring together policy makers, technology, solutions suppliers from major companies leading European (Alstom, Siemens), OEMs (Daimler and Scania), and road owners and operators (concessionary company and county authority), from at least 3 EU States deeply involved in the freight transport greening (France, Germany and Sweden). An update of the existing and developing technologies will be presented as an answer to the great challenges that the EU faces. The debate with the audience will allow to express the pro/con and to address the issues of implementation, as well as to assess the benefits, drawbacks, and future perspectives of proposed solutions.
