Objectives and Organisation of the SIS 46: Truck Platooning: next Steps
The session will be built around presentation and a roundtable involving the main stakeholders and a debate with the audience. A series of 3 short keynote introductory presentations will introduce the main elements and issues and provide the context, to feed the debate. The truck platooning is addressing questions related to autonomous driving and also competitiveness of the goods road transport. Therefore, there is a strong need to address this question on a holistic basis including a large number of stakeholders and countries. The European Truck Platooning Challenge (ETPC) showed successfully the impact of a political supported dynamic. The result achieved by the solid cooperation between industry and public authorities allowing for the first time a cross-border large scale testing on open roads. The network created under the 2016 truck platooning initiative will serve to coordinate and back up the different initiatives under preparation.
One concerns the specific technical steps requested in terms of interoperable platooning, impacts of platooning (Infrastructure, traffic, users, logistic) that could be addressed in the near future. Others are the Countries initiative are currently on track..
The session will be a unique opportunity to bring together policy makers, industry representatives from major companies leading European, OEMs (coordinated through ACEA), and public authorities (CEDR, EReg), from at least 3 EU States willing to lead further truck platooning initiatives (The Netherland, UK and Sweden). An update of the existing and developing technologies will be presented as an answer to the great challenges that the EU faces. The debate with the audience will allow to express the pro/con and to address the issues of implementation, as well as to assess the benefits, drawbacks, and future perspectives of proposed solutions..
